The Maribor Theatre Festival, which ended prematurely for the first time in its history last October due to the covid-19 epidemic, is planned between May 24 and June 6, 2021. "In spring, we will present the competition programme, which we were unfortunately unable to accomplish in October. Moreover, some other festival programme that was planned for the October edition will also be presented in the spring", said the artistic director Aleš Novak. For the festival to take place in the spring, it is of course necessary that the theatres are open to the public in time.

This year’s preparations are in many ways different than usual, as theatres remain (physically) closed to the public, which is also a similar situation in other European countries. "Theatres have moved some of their planned program online and we are observing these activities; however, it is clear that this season will be denoted by many restrictions and long-term closure of theatres," explains the artistic director. Future festival editions are also planned to be held in the spring time.
